Department of Biochemistry
Overview:
Biochemistry is a preclinical department which is functioning from the inception of this college under the Pune University, subsequently under North Maharashtra University and presently under MUHS Nashik. This department has always been actively participated in curricular, para-curricular and research activities.
The Department of Biochemistry in Shri Bhausaheb Hire Government Medical College, Dhule is a well equipped department. It has modern technology and equipment used in its clinical biochemistry laboratory. It caters to the functions of Medical College, General Hospital and serves to support the needs of all patients seeking medical help from surrounding Dhule and North Maharashtra area. Its student laboratory is well equipped. The department is looked after and administered by well qualified and dedicated staff. The facilities provided by the department are to fulfill needs of students to make them well trained medical and paramedical professionals.
The
broad goal of the teaching of biochemistry to undergraduate
student is to make them understand the scientific basis of
the life processes at the molecular level and to orient them
towards the application of the knowledge acquired in solving
clinical problems.
The curriculum followed is
‘Competency based undergraduate curriculum for the
Indian Medical Graduate’ as recommended by
Medical Council of India and is strictly
implemented from July 2019. The curriculum is designed to
train the undergraduate and postgraduate medical students as
per the Medical Council of India guidelines
2019 and it is tailored to,
- Encourage the staff to update the recent biochemical concepts and engage in research activities.
- Conduct journal club, clinical case discussion for postgraduate students.
- Conduct seminars, guest lectures and CME to impart the interdisciplinary nature of biochemistry.
- To provide quality clinical chemistry laboratory services.
Mission:
One of the major missions of the department is to provide high quality education to undergraduate and post graduation students and to start other allied health education courses in Biochemistry.
With the constant advancement of information and knowledge in the subject of Biochemistry, it is the need of the hour to stay updated and serve the patients in more efficient and affordable manner. It is the mission of the department to adopt modern technology in up-gradation of laboratory services with high quality.
It is also a major mission of the department to maintain high quality of research in Biochemistry with ultra-modern scientific instruments and equipment.
Vision:
Since our institution is a tertiary centre in health care, we dream to have our laboratories equipped with most advanced ultra-modern technology and state of the art scientific instruments for patient care as well as for UG and PG teaching.
In addition to the routine, standard methods used for diagnostic laboratory investigations, highly advanced and specialized laboratory investigations for molecular diagnosis like PCR, automated electrophoresis, chromatography, chemiluminessence, immunofluorescence, enzyme immuno-assays and other latest biochemical techniques.
The Department with faculty improvement programs to make the department efficient and active. It is the dream of the department to train the staff both teaching and technical persons to handle and operate the highly sophisticated and sensitive instruments and equipment in Biochemistry.
The vision of the department is also to start facilities of research and service regarding biochemical basis of inherited disorders with their associated sequel; environmental health hazards; cancer and carcinogenesis.
It is also a broad vision of the department to carryout basic as well as applied research work with community based approach.
Functions & Objectives:
- OBJECTIVES:
- To upgrade present medical education standards to keep pace with developing knowledge and information in Biochemistry subject.
- Initiate newer medical and allied courses both at UG and PG level.
- To upgrade the present clinical biochemistry laboratory to latest available state of the art technology in patient care at tertiary level hospital.
- Establishment of well equipped research laboratory for research work in Biochemistry as well as to undertake inter-disciplinary research projects in allied subjects.
- Awareness creation in general public regarding importance and role of biochemistry in community health.
- FUNCTIONS:
- Teaching and training of medical biochemistry to UG as well as PG medical students (MBBS, BSc-PMT, MD, PG-DMLT, and other allied health sciences courses). Participate in integrated teaching with other subjects as per the University and MCI norms and guidelines.
- Carry-out all conventional routine diagnostic and prognostic clinical biochemistry investigations for patient care. Analyze and interpret investigative data.
- Provide emergency laboratory services round the clock to support clinicians for treatment and care of patients.
- Carryout relevant biochemistry investigations in epidemics of infective diseases, for Medical board, and in Medico-legal cases.
- Make use of conventional techniques / instruments to perform biochemical analysis relevant to clinical screening and diagnosis.
- Monitor and control quality of biochemistry laboratory investigations. Provide quality clinical chemistry laboratory services.
- Standardize specialized biochemistry investigations for special and advanced care to cover Health Insurance Schemes of state (MPJAY) and central Government.
- Participate and involve in health care awareness, surveillance programs and schemes of state as well as central Governments.
- Training of technical staff to improve skill, up-date the growing knowledge of Biochemistry.
- Undertake and carry-out research projects in Biochemistry as well as in related subjects by collaboration with staff and students.
- Organize and conduct CME, workshops, seminars, conferences to impart the interdisciplinary nature of biochemistry and for up-dating knowledge of Biochemistry.
GOAL:
The broad goal of the teaching undergraduate students in biochemistry is to make them understand the scientific basis of the life processes at the molecular level and to orient them towards the application of the knowledge acquired in solving clinical problems.
-
OBJECTIVES:
- KNOWLEDGE: At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Describe the molecular and functional organization of a cell and list its sub-cellular components;
- Delineate structure, function and inter-relationships of biomolecules and consequences of deviation from normal;
- Summarize the fundamental aspects of enzymology and clinical application wherein regulation of enzymatic activity is altered;
- Describe digestion and assimilation of nutrients and consequences of malnutrition;
- Integrate the various aspects of metabolism and their regulatory pathways;
- Explain the biochemical basis of inherited disorders with their associated sequel;
- Describe mechanisms involved in maintenance of body fluid and pH homeostasis;
- Outline the molecular mechanisms of gene expression and regulation, the principles of genetic engineering and their application in medicine.
- Summarize the molecular concept of body defenses and their application in medicine;
- Outline the biochemical basis of environmental health hazards, biochemical basis of cancer and carcinogenesis;
- Familiarize with the principles of various conventional and specialized laboratory investigations and instrumentation analysis and interpretation of given data;
- Suggest experiments to support
theoretical concepts and clinical diagnosis;
- SKILLS
- At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Make use of conventional techniques / instruments to perform biochemical analysis relevant to clinical screening and diagnosis;
- Analyze and interpret investigative data;
- Demonstrate the skills of
solving scientific and clinical problems and decision
making.
- INTEGRATION
The knowledge acquired in biochemistry shall help the students to integrate molecular events with structure and function of the human body in health and disease.
