Forensic Medicine and Toxicology

Introduction-

The Forensic Medicine & Toxicology department has been in existence since the very inception of this college. In July 2021 this department shifted in to the present new state of art, well equipped and spacious building. Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at SBH GMC, Dhule has to cater bulk of medico-legal work in the region including postmortem and ante-mortem work. The cases of medico-legal work from Dhule district jurisdiction area are brought to our department. The department has to provide medico-legal opinions in cases referred from adjoining districts of Maharashtra (Jalgaon, Nashik, Nandurbar and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The department is Regional center of Excellence for Nashik revenue Division. Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College is also involved in undergraduate teaching of second and third MBBS students and also postgraduate teaching (PG course started from academic year 2024-2025).

1. To produce trained medical graduates and experts who can handle medico-legal work in day-to-day practice
2. To inculcate highest values, ethics, professionalism and scientific aptitude among various stake holders
3. To establish an institute of medico-legal services to provide all sort of medico-legal aids under one roof.

Mission

• To create a state of art facility to impart quality medical education and research in the subject and to establish center of excellence to provide quality medico-legal services to aid in criminal justice system.

GOAL

• The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in forensic medicine is to produce medical graduate who is well informed about medicolegal responsibilities in practice of medicine.
• He/she will also be capable of making observations and inferring conclusions by logical deductions to set enquires on the right track in criminal matters and connected medicolegal problems.
• He/she acquires knowledge of law in relation to medical practice, medical negligence and respect for codes of medical ethics.

• Medico-legal post-mortem examinations (including death in custody)
• Preservation of dead bodies in cold storage (Capacity: 40 bodies in walk in cold rooms)
• Medico-legal examination of victims and accused of sexual offence.
• Examination of weapon.
• Expert opinion in medicolegal cases.
• Certification of age.
• Certification of potency.
• Antemortem medicolegal work like expert opinion in cases of injuries, asphyxial deaths etc.

• Teaching Forensic Medicine and Toxicology to undergraduate/MBBS students, as per MUHS and NMC guidelines.
• Teaching of Post graduate students.
