Department of Pharmacology

  • Introduction:

Pharmacology is a Para-Clinical subject included in the IInd year M. B. B. S. curriculum. The Department of Pharmacology plays a very important role in Medical Teaching via practical and theory classes.  It is well equipped with excellent facilities and infrastructure having Research laboratory, Clinical Pharmacology unit and Experimental Pharmacology laboratory. As a part of the syllabus, students are also taught graph readings and prescription writing. Clinical problems are actively discussed.

This Department is also involved in teaching homeopathy doctors through Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology.

Department of Pharmacology has fully functioning approved and registered Institutional Ethics Committee and Institutional Animal Ethics Committee.

The Central drug store as well as Dispensary function under department of Pharmacology.

Department of Pharmacology has its very rich collection of 225 medical books in the departmental library.

  • Mission:

Develop a basic Indian Medical Graduate having sound knowledge of drugs to cater to National Health Needs and National Health Programmes.

  • Vision:
  1. To develop a postgraduate who can take up challenges in medical education, pharmaceutical industry, new drug development and research.
  2. To establish a fully functional Pharmacovigilance Center.
  • Objectives:
  1. To develop a basic Indian Medical Graduate having sound knowledge of drugs for the betterment and welfare of society.
  2. To develop good and Rational prescribing skills.
  3. To develop Problem solving and Decision making skills.
  4. To develop Communication skills and self learning attitude.

  6. To develop Orientation to Research.
  • Activities carried out under Department of Pharmacology:
  1. Teaching:

Lectures, practical’s and tutorials of undergraduate medical students and students of Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology are carried out regularly.  Lectures of visiting professors, and integrated teaching sessions are also carried out periodically. Lectures on Rational Prescribing and Antibiotic Policy are conducted regularly for newly passed M. B. B. S. students as a part of Internship Orientation Programme.

  1. Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) :

Department of Pharmacology plays vital role in approving synopsis proposals/research study protocols submitted by all teaching departments, viz Clinical, Para Clinical and Pre Clinical. Professor and Head of Department of Pharmacology has a role as Member Secretary of the Institutional Ethics Committee.

  1. Pharmacovigilance Committee:

Pharmacovigilance Committee plays a vital role in monitoring adverse drug reactions in the hospital. Meetings are organized regularly. Training sessions for health care personnel’s are conducted regularly.

 

  1. Central Animal House:

The Central Animal House is maintained by Department of Pharmacology and is registered with CPCSEA. Registration No. is 447/GO/R/E/S/01/CPCSEA and is valid till 02/08/2023. Periodic meetings and inspection are held.

 

  1. Central Drug Store:

The Central Drug Store is under administrative control of Department of Pharmacology.

Procuring, storage and dispensing of drugs is done by the drug store.

Regular drug audits are carried out.
